Asked Questions

Electricity costs significantly more to provide during times when customers are using more – typically business days from 2 to 6 p.m. in the summer, on hot, humid days when AC use is highest. Alternately, electricity costs less to provide when customers are using less. Electric rates that vary with the cost of delivering to customers allow customers the opportunity to lower their bills by shifting their energy use to the times when costs are lower.

Energy Savings Days are select days in the summer when Consumers Energy will ask you to reduce your energy use. Up to fourteen times per year, on days when customers are using the most electricity, Consumers Energy will schedule an Energy Savings Day. 24 hours in advance, customers participating in Peak Time Rewards and Critical Peak Pricing will receive a notification (text, email, or phone) and be prompted to reduce energy use from 2 to 6 p.m. to save on their bill.

It’s simple. We will notify you to shift your energy use away from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Energy Savings Days. If you reduce your energy use, you will receive a credit on your bill.

It's simple. Receive a discounted rate all summer long during the hours of 12 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and 12 a.m. In return, we will notify you on Energy Savings Days to shift your energy use during the hours of 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you are unable to shift your energy use during these times you will receive a charge of $0.95 per kWh for your energy use.

You can easily shift energy by making simple changes like raising the set point on your thermostat and delaying the use of electric-intensive appliances. Electric-intensive appliances include: clothes washer/dryer, dishwasher, window air conditioners, dehumidifiers, cooking, bathing/showering (for electrically heated hot water and/or water supplied by well pumps). Timers can be installed to automatically program the run time of some appliances.

Yes! By raising the temperature set point of your thermostat during 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Energy Savings Days, you can easily see savings to your bill. A programmable thermostat can help make this an effortless process.
